This is the road leading to my family’s home in Tennessee. It inspired the “road” that leads out of Sully Hollow and down into civilization. This road was used as a transport route for Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War and is a focal point in the book. It carries away Silas and Amadahy’s oldest children, Micajah and Aurelia, into the hardships of war. It brings danger and aid to the isolated Sully Hollow. It also brings the realization that not everyone will make it out of the war alive. Silas, along with his whole family, must decide how to protect themselves and most importantly, how to guide a torn family back together. #writersofinstagram #thethunderingones #themooneyedones #appalachianhistory

November is #nativeamericanheritagemonth. The Native American Festival at the museum just ended, and even though I’m in the middle of NaNo and reading two other books right now, I always come back to this one. #thirteenmoons is one of my favorite reads and I’ve cherished this abridged copy in Cherokee that I picked up during my research trip for #themooneyedones. My Cherokee isn’t perfect and I’m not brave enough to speak it in conversation like I am with Mandarin, but I always enjoy the process of reading a book I love while learning a new language at the same time. #amreading #charlesfrazier #cherokeelanguage
